When ornamental makes more sense than privacy

An ornamental fence is the right call when the view is part of what you like about your yard. The pickets draw a firm line and hold a dog in, but you still see the lawn, the plantings, and the open space around the house, so the yard doesn't feel smaller the day the fence goes up. The tradeoff is privacy. If you want to screen out a neighbor's deck, a wood or composite privacy fence does that job and ornamental won't.

What keeps a black fence from rusting

Bare steel rusts, and painted ornamental tends to bleed rust at the welds within a few Kansas City winters, because the paint is thinnest right where water collects. The ornamental iron fencing we install is E-coated and then powder-coated, a baked-on two-layer finish that holds its black color instead of spotting orange at the joints. It's a detail worth asking about on any quote, because from the curb a painted fence and a powder-coated one look identical on the day they go in.

Keeping a straight line in Johnson County soil

Ornamental fencing is less forgiving of movement than wood, because a post that shifts even a little shows up as a picket line that wanders. Johnson County's clay swells when it's wet and heaves when it freezes, and a post that stops above the frost line gets nudged out of place a bit more every winter. Setting every post 36 inches deep in concrete keeps it below the ground that moves. On a yard that slopes, the panels are racked to follow the grade so the pickets stay plumb, or stepped in level sections where the ground drops too sharply to rack.
