A new wood fence goes up bright and pale, and the sun starts graying it within the first season. Stain and sealer slow that down, but timing matters. Fresh lumber still carries moisture, and stain brushed on too soon sits on the surface instead of soaking in, so we let the boards dry and check the moisture before we seal.
