The rust gets stopped, not painted over
When water sits in a hollow ornamental post it corrodes from the inside and bleeds a rust stain down onto the stone or stucco below. Spray paint hides it for a month and it comes right back. We cut out the corrosion, treat and prime the sound metal, re-weld or sleeve the failed section, and reset the base so water drains away from it. The stain stops returning because the source was removed, not covered.
